The AWiDH Mentorship Program: Fostering Personal and Professional Growth
Mentees and Mentors gathered at Sarova Whitesands in Mombasa, Kenya from October 24-26, 2024, for a three-day training program to foster personal and professional growth by enhancing business acumen, leadership skills, and mental well-being. Focusing on leadership principles tailored to digital health, strategic communication, effective pitching, and entrepreneurial thinking.
“I learnt the importance of authentic and strategic communication and that how we market the product is just as crucial as the product itself.” – Estelle Kelly Nguefang Ketchejeu, Founding member, Ophthalmology Practice and Research Observatory (OphPRO) (Cameroon)
Mentees engaged in practical exercises including crafting compelling pitches for their digital health solutions, learning how to articulate their vision to potential investors and stakeholders effectively. These hands-on experiences build participants’ confidence and prepare them to navigate how to secure funding and support for their initiatives.
In addition to leadership training, the program covered product development and resource mobilization strategies, encouraging mentees to think creatively about how to address the unique healthcare challenges in their communities.
“The AWiDH program has taught me to think big and not limit myself to the local market and when seeking investment to think about expansion from the start.” – Inas Abdelwahed, Co-founder, Otida (Egypt)
The program also prioritized well-being, incorporating reflective wellness walks along the beach to recharge participants’ spirits and foster community. These moments of reflection are vital for nurturing mental health and encouraging participants to prioritize their well-being as they embark on their leadership journeys. In turn, emphasizing the importance of a supportive environment where women can share their experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting connections.
“I have been inspired by the unique innovations by other women across Africa and it has enhanced my perspective to enhance my collaboration and partnership efforts.” – Terry Mochire, Co-Founder, IntelliSOFT Consulting Ltd (Kenya)
Graduation ceremonies at the end of the program celebrated the achievements of the participants. Each mentee leaves the program equipped not only with new skills but also with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
