AWIDH’s Progress in Tackling Gender Disparities in Digital Health
Founded in March 2022, the African Women in Digital Health (AWiDH) initiative is not only a response to the obvious gender disparities in digital health. AWiDH is a transformative movement born of ambition and purpose: to ensure African women lead and shape the digital health landscape across the continent, taking their rightful place at the forefront of innovation and progress.
From a brainstorming session in Dakar two years ago to its official recognition by the Africa CDC as a flagship program and finally, its official launch at the Conference on Public Health in Africa and Africa Health Tech Summit in Kigali in December 2022, the initiative has gained momentum thanks to the dedication of partners who share its vision.
At its core, AWiDH is not simply a call for inclusion; it is a call to action. It urges all stakeholders, governments, organizations, and individuals to join in creating a future where women are not just participants but leaders in digital health transformation across Africa.
In our 2-year report, we take stock of the progress made on:
– Establishing the AWiDH Working Group, which serves as an advisory group, provides strategic guidance for the initiative.
– Building strategic partnerships with international organizations providing resources, expertise, and opportunities to drive meaningful change and impact for the program.
– Empowering women across Africa with the digital skills necessary to thrive in the rapidly evolving healthcare sector through our mentorship program.
– Strengthening the collective commitments of partners and key stakeholders. Pushing the conversation forward on enhancing women’s skills and representation and integrating gender-sensitive policies in digital health governance, during key high-level events.
